Shelley Miller in exhibition in Salvador, Brazil
I am currently in an exhibition called "Saccharum BA" at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia in Salvador, Brazil. The show is up until July 30, 2009. This group show revolves around the theme of sugar, it's history in Brazil and specifically in Salvador, as well as sugar's current role in society and in the economy.
I created a sugar mural at the museum as well as exhibited 3 large photos of a previous installation that I did in Brazil last year. For all the details on the making of the mural and more photos, visit my personal blog:

We're having our annual thematic art show and open studio weekend!
Gauche Vernissage: Thursday May 28th from 7pm- midnight
450 Beaumont Ave. Park Extension, Montreal
Be a part of the awkwardness of a three way phone call in Adam Brown's interactive broken telephone installation Get embarrassed for the life like and oh-so-gauche portrait of Stephen Harper as an artist by Kate Puxley. Win one of the many miniature left/gauche hand trophies made out of glass by Vanessa Yanow. Be boggled by how Stephen H Kawai's "Gauche interactions with a Molecule" keeps this crazy chemist's mobile in tact. Dance inappropriately to gauche themed music by CKUT's Venus Collective's very own deejay Nomnryn.
If you can't make it to the Gauche opening, or if you can't get enough of the Long Haul action, come
to our open studio weekend! All 18 studios will be open for the voyeur in you. Come and meet the 28 artists that make up the Long Hall. Enjoy the range of work spaces - from utterly chaotic to super sparse, all of them inspiring. Diverse creation will be on display and for sale in each artist's studio. Felted rugs, drawing, painting, photo, glass, jewelry, and much more.
Open studio weekend:
Saturday and Sunday, May 30th and 31st, 2009
from noon - six
(gauche show will be open for viewing)

Collaborative project
I wanted to share the latest project I have been working on. It is the first one of the year! I was approached by Ana Masut, a student in industrial design, to create a lumberjack style plaid for her chair cover. The frame is made of wood, the leather support is a traditional babiche knotting method, the cushion covers are hand felted and are stuffed with Canadian feathers. It is a prototype for a chair that will be selling at kastella, kastella.ca , here in Montreal. If you want to check it out, it will be on display at the University of Montreal until May 2nd from 12h-19h.

The Chocolate Competition
In March, I will once again participate in the Artist Project - Toronto art fair. Each year they chose a different theme for competition - this year's theme is CHOCOLATE. Here's my submission titled I'm losing time while they're eating chocolate; Visual Voice Gallery, Nov. 26, 2008, 5:41:14 p. m. - 5:42:52 p.m.

Recent Works (Stephen H Kawai)
Someone complained that all of my vernissage pics show people and only bad glimpses of the artwork. Fair enough. Here are some recent works at the DLAC show.

SUPERNATURAL LONG HAUL
I have been putting together a book of my work and I noticed this "Long Haul" reference in one of the drawings created about 3 or 4 years ago. Not referencing this "Long Haul", I didn't live here in Montreal and had not heard of the place. Anyway...(version of whole drawing here)
