The Long Haul occupies 8000 square feet of an industrial building. With 18 studios housing 30 artists, it is a hive for creation. Artists working in all visual media will open their doors to the public to show their work spaces, their art and their works in progress. The open studio weekend will give art enthusiasts a chance to engage with artists and art on an intimate level, and collectors an opportunity to buy directly from the artists. Flame working glass, weaving on a loom, and paper-making demonstrations will be given throughout the weekend. Drawings, paintings, photography, textiles, jewellery and sculptures will be for sale. Making it over the tracks from the Mile End is guaranteed to satisfy your curiosity, and will give you a peek into a neighbourhood is changing faster than you can say: g e n t r i f i c a t i o n. The Invisible show will also be open for viewing during the open studio hours.

I'm pleased to invite you to submit your screen-destined artwork to the EMERGENCE competition and screening I'm curating for the HTMlles festival this fall!

Emergence is a curated screening of inceptive screen-based Canadian/Quebecois artworks directed by women. Canada-based artists are invited to submit their first screen-based artwork to be screened and to compete for the HTMlles 2010 Festival of Media Art + Digital Culture’s Emerging Artist Award.

Entries to the public call for submissions must be under 9 minutes in length and may consist of time-based screenable media including video art, experimental short film, animation, video performance, mixed media, etc.

Curator Annie Briard will distill an initial selection of works from submissions, to be followed by a screening for jury members comprised of artists, curators and producers.

The ten (10) semifinalist works will be selected and screened at HTMlles, competing for the audience’s vote, determining the winning work. The semi-finalist works will also be featured on the HTMlles website for additional public votes.

The winning artwork will be announced and presented at HTMlles’s closing Gala where the Artist will be publically awarded her/his prize.

Deadline: All submissions must be received by September 13, 2010, by 9:00 PM.

Here at the longhaul/corrid'art, we have an annual group show. The theme is the alphabet and this year was the letter H. We are a mix of artists, illustrators, craftspeople and writers and choosing one word is a challenge. We all gathered together, ate some good food, discussed and finally decided on our word. It was a tough call between Hot dog and Hiatus but, Hiatus had more options in the end. It is such a fun experience when we all come out of our studios and create a show representative of all of us. That is the best part of the longhaul. Here are some photos of what we all put together. You can check out the contributor column on this page to see who we are: past and present. A Performance Celebrating Water | June 21 2010

How do we relate to water after the gulf oil crisis? What information can our senses bring to our consciousness of water at this present moment in time?

I'm pleased to invite you to an event I'll be performing at this coming Monday June 21st, 2010. The Thinking with Water Project http://thinkingwithwater.net/content/about-workshop is hosting an Artists' panel “Thinking with Water: Beyond Text” from 4:45pm - 6:30pm. My freshwater mermaid will be making a short appearance, offering water samples from a collection of rivers and lakes of various regions of Quebec. Some water samples are out of stock and contaminated, while others taste like blueberry roots and rocks. Interaction guaranteed.

"Moving beyond text and materializing alternate approaches to thinking with water, artists and researchers Sarah Renshaw, Rae Staseson and Gisèle Trudel (Ælab) will present and discuss their work with water. Thoughtful, thought-provoking and materially rich, their artworks, Stream of Consciousness (2010), Water Drawing (2010) and the “conference performance” of light, sweet, cold, dark, crude (LSCDC) (2006-), offer a generative counterpoint to the written components of the Thinking With Water collection. During the opening reception, Emily Rose Michaud will offer a rare tasting of nearby waters."

The Long Haul presents its' 9th annual thematic group show: HIATUS

HIATUS [hahy-ey-tuys] - noun

1. A break or interruption in the continuity of a work, series, action etc.
2. A missing part, gap or opening
3. Grammar, prosody. The coming together with or without break or slight pause of 2 vowels in successive words or syllables, as in: see easily.
4. Anatomy. A natural fissure, cleft or foramen in a bone or other structure.

Over 20 artists working in all media will exhibit their Hiatus inspired creations.

I am currently in an exhibition called "Saccharum BA" at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia in Salvador, Brazil. The show is up until July 30, 2009. This group show revolves around the theme of sugar, it's history in Brazil and specifically in Salvador, as well as sugar's current role in society and in the economy.

Collaborative project

I wanted to share the latest project I have been working on. It is the first one of the year! I was approached by Ana Masut, a student in industrial design, to create a lumberjack style plaid for her chair cover. The frame is made of wood, the leather support is a traditional babiche knotting method, the cushion covers are hand felted and are stuffed with Canadian feathers. It is a prototype for a chair that will be selling at kastella, kastella.ca , here in Montreal. If you want to check it out, it will be on display at the University of Montreal until May 2nd from 12h-19h.

I'm in the end-of-semester crunch time of my first term in the MFA program at The University of Western Ontario in London. I've read a ton of dense theory, and done a little bit of art-making.

The most exciting work I've been up to has been making collaborative drawings with local artists Peter Thompson and James Kirkpatrick. We've made some zines of these, and I've made some of my solo drawings as well, and sent them off to the Montreal Expozine: Nov. 29-30, 12 pm to 6 pm at 5035 St-Dominique (Église Saint-Enfant Jésus, between St-Joseph and Laurier, near Laurier Métro).

Exposition DEUX UNIVERS

Stephen H Kawai will be showing mobiles from two series, “Spheres” and “Flora”, in a solo show entitled DEUX UNIVERS. The vernissage will be on Thursday, Dec 4 (6–9 pm). Le Temps Retrouvé is an exhibition about time, place, object and memory. These works of Found Art are neither sculpture nor painting, but hover in the space between. Old and new are assembled together, transforming relics and debris into pieces of treasure.

“The series Mémoires is inspired by things friends have saved for me, items I have found on my way to visit them at their homes, or during my travels with them around the city and countryside. Cast-off objects are given new life, entwined within the bonds of friendship. Like cherished souvenirs, each personal compilation is kept in its own dark walnut drawer”.

“In the works of Imprints, every piece embodies a private recollection. Rusted plates of armour lay fixed in a concrete ground, and melted beeswax heals the scars of the past. As long forgotten objects leave their mark, these memories, though altered by time, remain imprinted on my mind”.

Heidi Barkun is a mixed-media artist inspired by the intrinsic beauty of the body, its fragility and strength, and the magnificence that emerges from the process of decay. She works with an array of textures that coalesce into corporeal, emotional and natural landscapes.

Heidi was born in Montreal, Canada in 1971. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Anatomy and Cell Biology from McGill University in 1995, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction in Studio Arts from Concordia University in 1999. Her first solo exhibition was held at Galerie SAS in 2002, followed by Galerie Simon Blais in 2003, and NEST gallery in 2005. She has participated in several important group shows in Montreal and Toronto during her professional career. Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections, most notably the Senvest Collection, Banque Nationale du Canada, and the Avmor Collection. Heidi Barkun is represented by Soho Myriad Art Consultants in Los Angeles and Atlanta, USA.

Three of my new sculptures are going to the SOFA expo in Chicago next week with Option Art Gallery.

"In its 15th year, Sculptural Objects and Functional Art is the world's foremost fairs of contemporary decorative art and design. With 100 international galleries and dealers from 16 countries, the fair also features special exhibits by internationally renowned art museums, arts organizations and artists as well as an extensive lecture series."

This exhibit runs from November 7 to 9, 2008. Opening night November 6th, from 7 - 10pm. Festival Hall, Navy Pier, Chicago. http://www.sofaexpo.com/

"Lux Operan". 2008. Flame worked glass, blown glass, crystal rhinestones, fabric, wool, flock, copper tubing, pvc, metal and battery operated led's. 15" x 20" x 20"

This sculpture (above) pulsates with light! Adam Brown helped me with the lighting aspect of the piece.

"Collaborating with Her Story - Incarnation I". 2008. An early 1900's unfinished anonymous embroidery project on raw linen, flame worked glass, antique newspaper clippings, antique stencil paper, raw silk, thread, linen, wire, metal and down. 38" x 36" x 8"

This piece (above) started with an unfinished anonymous embroidery project from the early 1900's that I bought at The Little Shop. I brought it home, "finished" it, and turned it into a sculpture. It is the beginning of a new series I am starting that will be based on finishing unfinished textile hobby projects.

Vernissage at Galerie Bjios

Here are a few pics from last month's vernissage for my (Stephen H Kawai) exposition at Galerie Bjios (http://www.galeriebjios.blogspot.com/). The place consists of two sunny rooms, as well as a boutique space, all situated behind the most charming of teahouses on rue St. Hubert. The show went very well thanks to Chloe and Audrey, two artists who coordinate the goings-on in the art space.

I wore a shirt... had to be well-dressed for the mobiles!

Some of the pieces inspired hunger...

others mezmerized their unsuspecting victims...

... while some just made people smile.

All and all, it was a great time with many more people coming than I had expected. The fact that there was a teahouse was wonderful, especially when the gallery space became a bit crowded.

Seriously, I am grateful to the many of you (Longhaulers) who came to see the show and I encourage any of you would didn't to check out the space. They have some interesting shows lined up and are on the lookout for artists for future expositions.

Mobile Exposition at Galerie Bjios

Stephen H Kawai will have a show at Galerie Bjios (5940 St. Hubert, near Metro Rosemont) from September 17th to October 5th. The vernissage will take place from 7 to 10 pm on Friday, September 19th. The exhibition will include a number of mobiles, both recent and older. The gallery is associated with a tea house so come by, grab a cup and enjoy the art!

Here are a couples pictures from the main room of the Silent Auction I organized, which took place at the Long Haul on May 27 & 28, 2006. The show was open for viewing on these two days, then culminated in an evening emceed by former Hauler Jan Desrosiers on the 28th. Lots of artwork found homes, the profits went to the artists, and it was a fun time. Click images to enlarge.

Pindemonium #4 - June 2008

This year Lisa and Melissa proposed they hold their annual Pindemonium event at the Long Haul Gallery. We were delighted to host this unique and interactive art event! The concept is that each exhibitor designs a pin for the show and then Lisa and Melissa punch out 10 or 20 pins of each design for both display and trade (they made over 1000 pins for this show!?). On the night of the event each of the artists procures their bundle of pins and trades them with other pin holders. Lisa and Melissa make additional grab bags of miscellaneous pins for the public to buy and join the trade. It's a lovely opportunity to meet strangers, to check out the small format artwork, and to run around like you're a kid back in school trading stickers (or baseball cards) again! Very clever and unique pin design: "Mon Portable" by Afke Benoit. Each pin was stuffed with dirt and little clover sprouts that she grew in advance, especially for the night of the trade. You had to water your little sprouted pin with a water dropper. Mine lasted 5 days.

My googly-eye pins, all ready to trade. Of course I was compelled to painstakingly make each pin a one-of-a-kind object. Wish we had more details of the individual pins, there were so many good ones!

Here's a picture of my piece from this year's theme show, Ferment: my Tempeh Reuben Sandwich. I'm planning to put up some archival pictures soon too, from the Silent Art Auction of May 2006, so stay tuned.

Also, I just want to say that I'm excited for the possibilities of keeping up to date with everyone in the Haul through this new blog. There's so many of us now, that even if everyone does one post a month, it will still average out to one post each day... it has the opportunity to become a veritable hot-spot for art things not only in Montreal but from all over the place.
